Core Program Description
Music is part of our lives long before we ever think about what it may be doing within our brains. A song can transport us to another time. Rhythm can energize us, organize movement, or give us another way to express ourselves. Making music asks our brains and bodies to listen, anticipate, remember, coordinate and create. Sometimes music can reach something within us that words cannot.
SoundMind Solutions invites participants to explore these connections with greater intention. Drawing upon current research, decades of professional musical experience, and Karen Olson’s work with sound, healing and intuitive music, SoundMind brings together science, music and lived experience in ways that are understandable, practical and deeply human.
Participants may be curious about memory or brain health, want greater focus or creativity, be interested in healthy aging or neuroplasticity, be musicians or performers curious about the highly trained musical brain, or be looking for new ways to support someone they love during a time of cognitive change.
SoundMind also honors spiritual presence and awareness. The program is universal and is not based on one religion or belief system. Deeper material may explore intuition, silence, prayer or contemplation, the Divine or a Higher Power, and the experience of connecting to something greater than ourselves.
More Than Listening
Listening is only one part of SoundMind. The program also explores singing, playing, drumming, movement, improvisation and creation. Making music can engage hearing, attention, memory, timing, movement, prediction, emotion and communication. SoundMind explores musical participation across the lifespan—from a person beginning an instrument later in life to a professional performer shaped by decades of training.
The point isn’t perfection. The point is participation.
A Layered Model: The Discussion Expands at Each Level
A central feature of SoundMind is that the same monthly theme can be explored at increasing levels of depth. Members are not simply given unrelated extra content as they move up a level. The topic itself expands: first through learning and observation, then through guided experience, and finally through connection, discussion and deeper exploration.
